Monsters of Rock debuted at Castle Donington in England in 1980 with Rainbow, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Saxon and others. Over the following years, the festival became associated with some of the biggest names in hard rock and heavy metal, including AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Guns N' Roses, Slayer and Metallica.

The 1988 U.S. Monsters of Rock tour became a landmark arena-era rock package. Van Halen headlined, with Scorpions, Dokken, Metallica and Kingdom Come on the bill. The tour ran across the United States from late May through July, including a major stop at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
